Let me tell you a quick story…

A few years ago I was surfing with a friend in Quepos, Costa Rica and I injured my shoulder. My friend who is a full time expat in Costa Rica said, “Let’s go see my doctor, she’s one of the best orthopedic surgeons in Costa Rica”. He pulled out his phone and texted her directly. She responded right away and said, “You should go see my colleague because I specialize in knees and ankles and he’s the best for shoulders”. She sent us his contact info and we sent him a text message. He responded right away, “Call me”. I called him up and he said, “When do you want to come to my office in San Jose?”. I scheduled to see him that afternoon (that never happens in the U.S. - direct access to an ortho surgeon and same day appointment) and he sent us his office address. We arrived at his office located in a state of the art modern design facility and signed in with the receptionist. In less than 5 minutes the doctor came over and walked me into his office. He did an ultrasound right there in his office and explained to me what he was seeing, then he wrote me a prescription for an Xray and I took the elevator to radiology and had the x-ray done in less than 10 minutes. I went back to his office and he reviewed the images with me. He explained the diagnosis to me and offered two options. He could aspirate the calcifications in my shoulder joint or I could take some anti inflammatories and reevaluate in a few days. I chose the anti inflammatories. He wrote me a prescription for the meds and I stopped by the pharmacy downstairs on the way out. The entire experience took less than an hour and cost me less than $100.00 including the ultrasound, the xray, the prescription and the doctors consult. I was stunned. It was unbelievable. I told everyone I knew how awesome this experience was. This would never happen in the states. Trust me I know, I’ve been a nurse a long time.

I healed up just fine after a few days and I shot him a text message to let him know I was much better. He said, “Alright let me know if you need anything else, you have my number”.

Let me tell you another quick story..

My daughter needed to get her wisdom teeth removed while we were in the US, so we shopped around with different dentists and the best price we could find was a quote for $5,500 dollars. So we went back to Costa Rica and had it done in Jaco on the pacific coast for $1,300 dollars with mild sedation in a beautiful setting with a team of dentists and oral surgeons. The dentist even called us and texted with us to check on her recovery the next day. We spent the next few days enjoying walks on the beach and gorgeous sunsets.

Fast forward a few years…

I’ve been living in Costa Rica part time and in Florida part time. I still work as a travel nurse when I’m in the states. Anytime a friend or family member needs medical or dental care, I recommend Costa Rica. I am constantly bragging about the excellent medical and dental care you can get in Costa Rica and how much money you can save. Occasionally I find myself complaining about the healthcare system in America because I am a nurse and part of that broken healthcare system.

One day a good friend said to me…

My job is easy. I coordinate everything for you, I find the right medical professionals, I schedule your trip, then pick you up at the airport. I drive you to your appointments, go to your appointment with you if you need translation or medical clarification, and I bring you back to your resort or accommodations and I help you coordinate some excursions for you and your family while you recover and get ready to fly back home. I drive you to the airport. I even follow up with you once you are back home to answer any questions and communicate with the medical professionals on your behalf.
